The small and verdant isle of Paxos, in the northern Ionian Sea near larger and iconic Corfu, is among the top destinations this summer season for Greek and foreign holiday-makers alike, in large part due to the popularity of the Greek-language series “Maestro Blue” on Netflix.
While the isle was already popular for vacationers seeking a more reclusive Ionian setting and as an anchorage for yachts and pleasure craft, its setting as the backdrop for the well-received series, a production of Mega Channel, has catapulted it to international status.
Local business operators who spoke to OT.gr said bookings are up by roughly 25 percent, compared to the same period last year, with some forecasting that the holiday season will extend beyond September.
“The Maestro series featured beautiful images of Paxos, and this had a positive impact on the number of tourists visiting the island. Most of the people who visit are English, Greek and Italian,” mayor Spyros Vlachopoulos told OT.gr.
He added that based on data available so far, the picturesque isle is “sold out” for July and August, with the all-important travel remittances just below the 2019 level – the banner year for Greece’s tourism sector.
