The processes inside SYRIZA main opposition party are in full swing, and while the announcement of the nominations for the succession of Alexis Tsipras is a matter of hours (as estimated), in view of the meeting of the Central Committee of the party at the end of the week.
Today at 13:00 the Political Secretariat is meeting, guided by the majority decision of the previous meeting, for a permanent conference in August, election of a president in early September and a regular conference in November. However, there are voices insisting that the timetable be changed, confirming the report of in about differences within SYRIZA and majority tendencies that call for the postponement of the procedures for the election of the president. Something that will be raised at today’s meeting of the General Assembly.
In particular, the RENE faction, namely Dionysis Temponeras, Panagiotis Rigas and Antonis Kotsakas, as well as Christos Spirtzis (who is now independent from the presidential Members’ Movement) is asking for elections later – in November.
In the trenches
Temponera’s letter to the members of the Central Committee, requesting the postponement of the procedures after the self-governing elections, is typical.
“A representative congress must emerge, which will elect new bodies and of course a new President, through our existing or new statutory procedures. Following this, we believe that the conference must be held properly after the self-governing elections, in an open, painstaking and persistent process, without hasty choices,” said Mr. Temponeras.
He himself, speaking of “electoral collapse” and “strategic defeat of SYRIZA”, poses the real issues and emphasizes that “the new SYRIZA, the new big party of the Progressive faction, needs a conference of account, identity, positions, political physiognomy and strategy ».
The reorganization goal cannot be achieved through a “fast track” congress, nor correspondingly through a grassroots presidential election in the summer, just to serve selfish political expediencies or to “hide the problem under the carpet”” underlines.
Political positions
At the same time, the alleged contenders for the presidency of SYRIZA hastened to give a “sample” of their political position, taking advantage of the floor of the Parliament, during the reading of the program statements.
Efi Ahtsioglou, who reportedly maintains a lead in the race, stated that “we will take on the difficult but also the most beautiful role of giving citizens a perspective, a left-wing, progressive and democratic perspective, a realistic perspective”, while Euclid Tsakalotos responded from the same podium to those who claim that “SYRIZA was a need for a special purpose” that “we will surprise them”.
For her part, Rena Dourou, (in her article on anatropinews), spoke about the need for a “realistic government proposal” from the side of a “large democratic faction”.
Nikos Pappas and Pavlos Polakis, who will probably claim the leadership, also gave their own stamp, with Mr. Pappas stating (Real News): “It would be a mistake to fold us into the “nest” of the radical Left. As a party we express and rally the whole world from the radical Left to the progressive Center.”
Pavlos Polakis, for his part, argues that “SYRIZA must do action and not just speak words, the trunk and the mouthpiece of the ruling Left. There is no social need for an additional party, waiting for “conditions to mature”.
It is noted that at the SYRIZA meeting, a new press representative is expected to be appointed, after the resignation of Popi Tsapanidou.
