Efthymis Lekkas spoke in an interview about climate change leading to a large increase in temperature. The professor of Geology and Natural Disaster Management commented that the fires reinforce the climate crisis and vice versa.
Speaking on MEGA channel, Mr. Lekkas mentioned that “Climate change also cuses landslides, droughts, floods”, as he said.
“The environmental system of Attica will collapse shortly”
“We are in a cycle that is spinning with ever-increasing speed, and events follow each other with tremendous speed. The fire is not in a large area but it is in key points. We must all understand that when a section of forest in Attica burns, this has a serious environmental impact.
I fear that the environmental system of Attica will collapse shortly. The remaining forests are specific. Also, in Rhodes the big fire is at a focal point and the effects will be big there as well”, he said initially.
Three stages
Regarding the actions to be taken, Mr. Lekkas said that all actions should be divided into three stages. Prevention, during the fire and after the fire.
“The actions we can take are very specific. We cooperate with the Authorities, the Region, with the Municipalities, but there are weaknesses in these mechanisms. We should give great importance to strengthening the Municipalities so that we can deal with them.
We could take further steps to reduce the chances. We must supervise the forests, especially in July where the last two weeks are the most critical. We have to monitor them more.”
