Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pressed home his government’s pledge to lift remaining restrictions on Greek citizens’ right to vote from their place of residence overseas, speaking in Parliament on Monday during debate on a relevant interior ministry draft law.
“We’re dealing with an issue that’s above partisan (political) lines. It’s an issue that should unite us; a ground-breaking bill that lifts all restrictions to the right to vote for Greeks who reside outside Greece. Hopefully, we’ll also have this same opportunity to reach a consensus when faced with other crucial challenges, such as climate change,” Mitsotakis told the plenary session.
He reminded that his first government (2019-2023) had made two attempts in 2019 to give registered voters living abroad, permanently or temporarily, the option of voting in Greek national elections from their place of residence – a right extended by most European countries to their citizens.
The time is now mature to “make the great leap forward” and ratify legislation that corrects noticeable mistakes and errors in relevant legislation, he stressed.
