Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will host visiting Indian President Narendra Modi at his Maximos Mansion government house in Athens on Friday morning, marking the first time in 40 years since the last such visit by an Indian head of state.

Indira Gandhi visited Greece in 1983 and met with then prime minister Andreas Papandreou.

A joint press briefing will be head by the two leaders, followed by a working lunch for the Greek and Indian delegations.

According to Greek government sources, Athens is promoting the country as a gateway for Indian products and services into the European Union. Additionally, the two sides are expected to discuss possible defense sector cooperation and investments by companies in either country into the other.

The Greek side is also interested in attracting more high-end Indian tourists, as roughly 40 million high-come Indians travel outside the country annually.
