Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a message on Wednesday afternoon over the shocking death of a man at the port of Piraeus the previous evening, as the latter was shown being pushed off a ferry boat’s ramp by two crew-members.

The 36-year-old drowned only meters away from a dock after falling into violently churning waters caused by the Blue Horizon ferry’s propellers. The unprecedented incident was captured on video footage and subsequently went viral on Greek-language social media.

Mitsotakis referred to an “indescribable end” to the man’s life, and one that’s morally intolerable.

“I stand before the shocking message that this tragedy sends: a combination of irresponsibility and cynicism, contempt and indifference, which eventually turns into violence…Yesterday’s shameful event does not represent the country we want, and I believe that no Greek … would want to see it as his or her image in the mirror of reality.
“In memory of Antonis (the victim), therefore, the state will do its duty. However, everyone should responsibly serve the role assigned to him.”

Meanwhile on Wednesday afternoon, the four crew-members, including the vessel’s captain, arrested and charged with manslaughter in relation to the shocking incident were due to be brought before Piraeus public prosecutor to provide an initial statement, part of the arraignment process.

A coroner, finally, officially ruled the cause of death as drowning.
