Coastal shipping operator Attica Group CEO Spyridon Paschalis on Thursday resigned in the wake of the shocking drowning death of a passenger who was pushed off a car ramp on Tuesday evening by two crew-members of the Blue Horizon ferry boat.
According to an announcement on Thursday by the group’s board of directors, Paschalis tendered his resignation, which was accepted.
Four crew-members, including the Blue Horizon’s captain, were arrested and charged with manslaughter, along with various violations of maritime safety codes.
In the announcement, Attica Group notes that “a young person was lost and this has deeply affected all of us. An expanded and in-depth investigation, with the assurance of the board of directors and shareholders and with the assistance of independent external consultants, will immediately commence to ensure that procedures and protocols of our group will never be violated by anyone again. We also commit that results of this investigation will be exploited for necessary reforms and changes, at any level and in any way necessary. Along these lines, the board of directors today accepted the resignation of the CEO of the company”.
The 36-year-old drowned only meters away from a port of a Piraeus dock after falling into violently churning waters caused by the Blue Horizon ferry’s propellers. The unprecedented incident was captured on video footage and subsequently went viral on Greek-language social media.
