At least six dead and six missing is the so far tragic toll after the passage of severed weather front Daniel which is receding today according to the national weather bureau. Hundreds are trapped in villages, while icons of the Apocalypse exist in Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala, Volos and South Pelion.
There are fears that the death toll will rise even further when rescue teams manage to reach the parts that have literally been submerged by water.
The Fire Department and the Army continued the rescue operations throughout the night, while at the first light of day the aerial vehicles will also enter the battle.
Pinios overflowed
A message through 112 was sent to the residents of the Farkadona, Klokoto, Georganades and Petroporos areas in order to move away from them due to the possible overflow of the Pinios river in Larissa.
Specifically, the message states: “If you are in the Farkadona area, move away towards Grizano and if you are in the areas of Klokotos, Georganades and Petroporos, move away towards Oichalia due to possible overflowing of the Pinios river. Follow the authorities’ instructions.”
The water level in Pinios has reached nine meters from the four that are usually registered during a downpour, said the regional governor of Thessaly, Kostas Agorastos, speaking to Open.
At the moment, the flood zones of Pinios have also filled with water, he noted. From 12 midnight until dawn, the water level is constant, he added.
When asked if there were more dead, the governor replied that he did not know.
Embankments were breached at the Gyrtoni Dam
In order to decongest Pinios, it was decided to break dykes at the Gyrtoni Dam.
Rescues continue in Karditsa
Kostas Agorastos also spoke to SKAI channel, stressing that today attention will be given to Karditsa, where rescue operations will continue by any means.
He emphasized that eight villages in Karditsa need help and the rescue crews will operate with boats, Hummers, heavy machinery and helicopters. “Some of the villages are not accessible,” said Mr. Agorastos.
“They are people who have remained in the villages and are currently on the highest points of their houses waiting to be picked up by rescuers,” he added. The number of missing people is also unknown.
