Authorities in the greater Volos area, in the central Greece coastal prefecture of Magnesia, on Wednesday afternoon issued a warning to residents to stay indoors and avoid travel, as torrential rain continued to pour on the region.
The rainfall, part of the latest intense storm front to pass through mainland Greece this month, comes a little more than weeks after another storm, Daniel, caused widespread flooding in the Thessaly plain and Magnesia prefecture.
The ongoing storm front, called Elias, caused flash flooding in the coastal city of Volos, which lies along the Pagasitikos Gulf but is overlooked by the Pelion mountain range, meaning significant amounts of rainfall drain into the sea at the specific site from various creeks and gulleys.
Major damage to infrastructure was caused by the previous storm in the Volos region.
The hardest hit area in the country on Tuesday was the northern part of the large island of Evia, which lies off eastern seaboard of Greece.
Power and water outages were reported in several townships, while a main north-south roadway was blocked by one of many landslides reported throughout northern Evia. The specific region was devastated by a major wildfire two years ago.
Indicative of the heavy rainfall that fell on northern Evia, a weather station in the town of Istiaia measured more than 230,000 cubic meters of water per 0.1 hectare (1,000 meters) on Wednesday.
Back on the mainland, the Sperchios River in south-central Greece, near the city of Lamia, overflowed and flooded farmland.
