Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with French President Emmanuel Macron in the Valletta, Malta on Friday, on the sidelines of the EUMED9 summit, with sources later citing satisfaction by both sides regarding bilateral defense cooperation, among others.

Sources in Athens also said Mitsotakis said the EU should make greater efforts to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters amid the climate change phenomenon – a point he also brought up during the summit.

The “hot button” issue of illegal migration, in relation to better securing the Union’s external borders, was also discussed, with the Greek premier underlining the need for regional cooperation to prevent the disembarkation of migrant boats.

The leaders of nine southern European Union countries met in Malta on Friday to discuss the problem of illegal migration.

The countries represented at the one-day summit included host Malta, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. Slovenia and Croatia, which have coastlines on the Adriatic Sea, were added to the so-called “Med Group” in 2021.
