
The temporary shut down would have come, sooner or later, for the OAKA sports facilities.
The seriousness of the situation as revealed by the findings on the static adequacy report of the shelters brought the decision to the forefront.
The renovation
The closure of the facilities, as mentioned above, was predestined.
This is because the project “Renovation of the Olympic Sports Center of Athens” amounting to 56.4 million euros which has been included in the Recovery Fund, requires the cessation of activities in order to carry out all the necessary repair and maintenance work or replacement of parts of the facilities.
The reopening
According to what the Greek government has submitted to the European Commission, the project should be completed by June 30, 2024.
And depending on the sub-projects foreseen, specific time milestones have been determined.
In detail, the OAKA renovation project includes:
- The “Extensive Inspection of the Metal Structures and Polycarbonates of the Sheltered Facilities of the OAKA” in the amount of 2.5 million euros. The contract completion date was April 1, 2023.
- The “repair, maintenance and replacement of parts of the metal constructions and polycarbonate roofs of the facilities” in the amount of 14.6 million euros. For these heavy works, the contract completion date is June 30, 2024. And for their execution, the facilities would have to be closed.
- The “preliminary study for the necessary maintenance works and works that contribute to the energy saving of the building facilities and the surrounding area” in the amount of 781,200 euros. The relevant contract has a completion date of October 10, 2022.
- The “final study, application study and execution of maintenance works and works that contribute to the energy saving of the relevant building facilities and the surrounding area” amounting to 36 million euros. Also those heavy works related to the energy upgrading of the facilities should be completed by June 30, 2024.
- The “study of sustainable development and utilization of existing facilities” in the amount of 362,700 euros. This is a work in progress although it should have been delivered by March 31, 2023.
- The “leasing of the Olympic Tennis Sports Center with the obligation to carry out a maintenance project and upgrade facilities”. Here, too, the contract must be completed on June 30, 2024.
- The “technical assistance” amounting to 2.1 million euros. On June 30, 2024, the project should be completed.
