
Christina Alexopoulou, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for the Transport sector, responded today, Friday, October 20, to a question of Chios Member of Parliament of PASOK – Movement for Change, Stavros Michaelidis, regarding the State Airport of Chios.
The deputy minister clarified in her statement that the projects are progressing and evolving according to the initial planning, while no amendment to the Master Plan for the modernization and development of the airport has been issued.
As he characteristically stated: “not only was the Master Plan for the modernization and development of the State Airport of Chios not amended, but on the contrary, all the efforts of the ministry and its services have been intensified, at least in the part of its competence, for the completion of both the remaining preparatory actions, as well as the project in general”.
She specifically referred to the projects included in this plan, namely:
The extension of the existing 1,511 meter runway to the North
The construction of a new airport building with an area of 4,000 sq.m. approximately, of a new Airport Control Tower (ATC) and the configuration of its surrounding area.
The extension of the aircraft parking floor to a final area of 15,000 sq.m. about.
Fuel storage facilities.
The Construction of airport support facilities (hangar, fire station auxiliary facilities and water tower).
In addition, she pointed out the works that are already in progress and concern the expansion and improvement of the maneuvering area of the State Airport of Chios:
The extension of the existing runway of 1,511 meters in length to the North, in an expropriated area, so that it acquires a total length of 1,799 meters with the required safety zones,
upgrading the strength of the existing runway section,
the formation of a runway end safety zone,
the construction of fencing at the borders of the expropriated area,
the extension of the existing internal ring road of the airport to the new boundaries of the expropriated area.
Mrs. Alexopoulou stated that the further strengthening of the security of airports, aviation and air navigation is a strong commitment of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. “We are working on this and as already announced by the minister, Mr. Christos Staikouras, resources of the Recovery and Resiliency Fund – amounting to 107 million euros, are being used to upgrade the infrastructure of the airports”, she concluded.
