The second meeting of the Steering Committee of the GReco Islands initiative – National Strategic Reference Framework took place on Sunday, October 29, in Fourni. The initiative, which is part of the NSRF 2021-2027, aims to contribute to addressing the challenges of micro-islands in an innovative and multifaceted way. The ultimate goal of the initiative is the sustainability and transformation towards that of the Greek islands, in order to ensure the economic and social well-being of their inhabitants and social cohesion.
Following the first Meeting held in Kythnos in June 2023, the criteria for selecting the islands to be financed as a matter of priority, taking into account spatial cohesion and balanced development, were presented and approved at Fourni. The consultation process with local communities was then discussed, as the initiative applies a “bottom-up” approach to planning and implementing the required actions, within the framework of the principle of partnership and multi-level governance.
Finally, the roadmap of the initiative was analyzed with the proposed schedule of actions. On the sidelines of the Meeting in Fournos, the members of the Committee and the participants visited co-financed NSRF projects and the Thymaina Desalination Unit.
The Ministries of National Economy and Finance, Environment and Energy, Shipping and Island Policy, Tourism as well as the Island Regions participate in the Steering Committee. Representatives of the European Commission also participated in the meeting of the Commission.
