The beloved actor Spyros Fokas passed away this morning. The sad news was announced by his wife, Lillian, with a post on Facebook in which she wrote “till we meet again my Spyro”.
Lilian Foka accompanied her post with the song “Ta deilina” by Giorgos Zambetas.
“There is no life for me without Spyros. For me Spyros is everything. He was never poor. He is so rich in heart and mind that he looks like a diamond mine to my eyes. Inside it is a piece of malama. It’s my gold!”, declared his wife Lilian Fokas in a newspaper some time ago.
Spyros Fokas, farewell to the great actor
Shortly after the beloved actor’s death became known, the Actor’s House sent its own message about his passing.
The farewell to Spyros Fokas by Pavlos Rigatos was also special, he sent his own message after the death of the beloved actor became known.
“A little while ago, a Great Artist, a Great Actor, Spyros Fokas, who was loved by the whole world and made our Greece proud with his journey and his morals, passed away for the neighborhood of the angels.
But it was as he said that he is Greek in the true meaning of the word, he loved everything Greek here, unfortunately, as usually happens, they did not give him therecognition he deserved, especially in the last years when he was having a hard time.
Nevertheless, he continued with dignity because above all he was a wonderful person.
I have been lucky in the last 12 years to be his friend as well as his wife Maria who has always been by his side until today with an incredible love that distinguished her for him.
We were united by music at some point he gave me one of his lyrics and that was it I put music on it and that’s how the song play a zeibeki to leave was made. That was from then until today our love has remained constant and will continue for many of us.
Spyro, I thank you personally for your great contribution to the field of entertainment and art
I wish my dear friend Good Heaven for your soul and condolences to your Maria and to your daughter Konstantina”, he characteristically wrote in his post.
Spyros Fokas, the actor who opened the doors of Hollywood
Spyros Androutsopoulos (Patra, August 17, 1937- November 10, 2023) artistically known as Spyros Fokas, had an important career abroad playing in films such as Rocco and his Brothers, by Luchino Visconti, and The Diamond of the Nile.
His face was recognizable worldwide and his great talent put him in some of the most expensive productions in the history of cinema.
His father was a travel agent and his mother hailed from Corfu. The Fokas family came to Athens when the actor was 9 years old.
From a young age he had a strong interest in drama and thus decided to become an actor.
But he could not then imagine how good he would become, so that the great directors and producers of Hollywood would ask him for important roles.
He graduated from Kostis Michaelidis School of Drama. He lived and worked for many years in America, but returned to Greece.
But it was in America that he made his “name” which played such an important role for him and for all the Greek actors who would follow in his footsteps.
Spyros Fokas was one of the first to show the path to an international career. Until then no one had done it.
The beloved actor made his film debut in 1959 in Andreas Lambrino’s film, Bloody Sunset. The film was then screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was a milestone for his international career.
The big distinction came with his appearance in Franco Rossi’s film The Death of a Friend, where he won an acting award at the Locardo Festival.
Spyros Fokas’ battle
Spyros Fokas, who passed away at the age of 86, had recently been facing many health problems and had been in a rehabilitation center in Magoula for the last few months.
Lilian Foka on Tuesday (24/10) published another photo of the actor. In it, Spyros Fokas can be seen in the bed of the rehabilitation center.
Spyros Fokas’ health problems started three years ago, when he had to be treated at the Corinth Hospital and from there transferred to Athens.
Since then, the multiple problems as well as the fire in Loutraki last year, forced him to look for a rehabilitation center, with the aim of getting back on his feet.
