Attica region’s northern suburbs were hard hit by a severe storm causing extensive damage to roads from fallen trees, disruption in ferries and power outages in some areas media reported Sunday.
The fire departments operation center received more than 100 calls Saturday night and Sunday morning mostly for fallen trees and for trapped people in elevators due to power cuts.
According to the fire department, the most affected areas were Agia Paraskevi, Psychiko, Chalandri, as well as Filothei, Pefki, Lykovrysi and Marousi.
Ferries are expected to resume operation after 5pm Sunday.
The emergency bulletin from the National Meteorological service said that these conditions are expected to continue until the evening hours of Sunday with main characteristic, heavy rain and storms while winds will blow southwesterly with intensity of 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale.
Heavy rains and storms will also continue until late in the evening in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western mainland and possibly the western and southern Peloponnese.
The phenomena are expected to gradually subdue, Sunday evening
