The Athens Police have issued a prohibition on public gatherings in the city center for today, citing concerns over potential clashes between far-right organizations and leftist collectives on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Imia events.
The directive, issued by the Director of the Athens Police, stipulates a 24-hour ban on any outdoor public assembly starting from 06:00 this afternoon. The restricted area encompasses Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue – Rizari – Vasilissis Sofias Avenue – Vasilissis Georgiou A’ Avenue – Syntagma Square – Othonos – Vasilissis Amalias Avenue – Vasilissis Olgas Avenue.
The prohibition is underscored by the announcement, citing a substantial risk to public safety due to the potential commission of serious crimes. Additionally, there is a perceived threat of significant disruption to the socio-economic life in the specified area, considering the scheduled gatherings.
Notably, members of the Golden Dawn have announced a gathering at the Imia Fallen Heroes Monument at Rigillis Square. Simultaneously, leftist groups have planned a counter-gathering commencing at 14:00 in the afternoon and extending into the evening. The authorities are taking proactive measures to mitigate potential tensions and maintain public order during these planned events.
