The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, who is in Athens on an official visit, opened her address to MPs in Parliament referring to Greece as the “cradle of Democracy,” and the Assembly as the “temple of Democracy” on Tuesday afternoon.
The President of the European Parliament in her opening remarks paid tribute to Alexei Navalny stating that he was first deprived of freedom and his life, adding that his legacy and his struggle would live on in the Russian people and all of us.
“For me, it is important to recognize his courage, his bravery, here, in this place, because Democracy needs courage,” she underlined.
“Alexei Navalny knew this, and every Ukrainian who fights, who fights in the field knows this, we all know this, and we all know that Greece will always be the symbol of Democracy.”
Ms. Metsola went on to laud Greece saying that the “ancient nation” had created architecture, art, and philosophy, which had shaped Western civilization and thought.
“The EU perspective is accompanied by opportunities but also by responsibilities,” emphasized Roberta Metsola, especially for demonstrating responsibility, highlighting the leading role played by Greece in various historical periods, most recently in the dynamic handling of the COVID pandemic, as well as its active participation in supporting Ukraine.
