High temperature records continued to fall in Greece in the first three months of the year, while the recent 2023-24 winter was the warmest on record for the east Mediterranean country, according to preliminary data released by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
The data, processed by the meteo.gr scientific group, showed temperatures recorded in Greece in January and February 2024 as far above seasonal averages.
This past winter also exceeded the high temp record of the 2015-16 season.
Meteo.gr’s 53 weather stations around Greece recorded most days in January 2024 as above the high temperature average for the specific day. For western Macedonia, for instance, average daily high temperatures were higher by as much as 3C.
February 2024 was the hottest over the past 15 years in northern Greece, according to meteo.gr, a subsidiary of the National Observatory of Athens.
