An upcoming meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara was made official after the countries’ Foreign Ministers met in Brussels last Thursday.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the 2-day NATO Summit.
The meeting is set to take place in mid-May. Diplomats announced that it would stay clear of ongoing issues regarding the countries’ Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf as disagreements remain strong. The meeting will rather focus on low politics and the promotion of a positive agenda. It will be an opportunity to reiterate the currently good bilateral relations between the states and to consolidate Greek-Turkish cooperation on migration. It is very likely that Prime Minister Mitsotakis will also visit the Greek diaspora in the Turkish region of Cappadocia.
The discussions on the logistics of the meeting are underway, including a timeline and framework for the meeting as well as who will be joining the two leaders.
