Greek Beach Visitors Can Report Violations on New ‘MyCoast’ App

Residents and travelers visiting Greece will now be able to report beach access violations thanks to a new app launched this week by the ministries of Economy & Finance and Digital Governance.

The “MyCoast” app is free and can be downloaded on smartphones or tablets.

The action comes as part of Greek government efforts to ensure free access to public beaches and to rein in illegal constructions and operations on coastlines. Shoreline use legislation was passed in Greek Parliament early last month spurring reactions among environmental groups. Earlier in April, the government announced the protection of 198 beaches from commercial activity or exploitation.

“MyCoast” app users will have to activate GPS services, locate the beach on the map, and access information about its concession status. If they observe restricted access or unauthorized installations like extra sunbeds or umbrellas, they will be able to report the incident adding a short description.

Users will also have access to previous reports which will be listed on the Economy & Finance Ministry’s “Register of Coast and Beach Concessions” for review by relevant authorities.

According to the ministries, the app will soon include AI technology which will investigate reported violations in real time.

During a presentation of the “MyCoast” application, Greek Economy & Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said it would “serve as a tool enabling citizens to become the government’s allies in the effort to ensure the orderly operation of businesses on coasts and beaches”.
