Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Friday emphasized a need to cease hostilities in Gaza and immediately end the violence so humanitarian aid can be supplied, speaking after a meeting with visiting Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.

Gerapetritis said a humanitarian crisis was transpiring in Gaza, with the concerns now being spillover in the wider Middle East.

“Greece is making a productive contribution to solving the problem, participating in peace processes, bilaterally, but also within the European Union and the United Nations, for a solution within the framework of UNSC resolutions,” he said, repeating the EU’s standing support for a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital and along pre-1967 borders.

Switching continents but to the equally troubling situation in Ukraine with the ongoing war raging more than two years into a Russian invasion, he said the situation was “a serious threat to peace and stability, not only for Europe but worldwide.”

“Greece and Canada from the first moment stood against revisionism, against any trampling of international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which we support, both bilaterally and in the context of international cooperation,” he stressed.

Referring to bilateral relations with Canada, he described them “historic”.
