Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport (AIA) is steadily climbing, in line with market predictions anticipating a milestone of around 30 million passengers in 2024. The airport’s strong performance persists, as June saw 3.30 million passengers, reflecting a notable 12.9% rise from June 2023.

Both domestic and international passenger traffic at the Athens International Airport have shown robust growth, surpassing last year’s figures by 7.5% and 15.4%, respectively.

In the first half of the year, the airport saw a total of 14.01 million passengers, marking an impressive 16% increase overall.

Domestic flights saw an 8.6% rise, while international flights soared by 19.5%. The total number of flights at AIA during the first six months of 2024 reached 119,853, reflecting a substantial 13.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Looking closer at flight activity, domestic routes increased by 6.4%, and international routes surged by 19.0% compared to 2023.

Greek tourism is poised for a significant uptick in the 2024 season, as predicted by industry experts, with major destinations already bustling with foreign visitors. June’s performance has notably outpaced last year, setting expectations for continued growth in the months ahead.

With such momentum, forecasts suggest that 2024 will surpass the record-breaking performances of 2023, with arrivals projected to increase by 5.3% to 34.5 million people, up from 32.7 million in 2023.

Last month, AIA announced a strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines to enhance connectivity with Sub-Saharan Africa. This collaboration is set to open Greece to a market of nearly 129 million people.
