The UFBB (Ultra-Fast Broadband) project is making significant strides in Greece with the country’s telecommunications company, OTE Group, at the helm. Construction is actively ongoing in Drama, Messinia, Corinthia, Evia, Chania, and the wider Attica, focusing on establishing FTTH (Fiber to the Home) network infrastructure in semi-urban and rural regions.
OTE signed the agreements for its participation in the UFBB project last June, with the first Fiber to the Home cabinet installed in Drama in late January 2024. By the end of 2024, OTE Group aims to complete FTTH construction in Attica, Evia, Corinthia, Messinia, Heraklion, and Chania.
This initiative will provide ultra-fast internet speeds of up to 1Gbps to over 350,000 households and businesses in semi-urban and rural areas across the country.
The Ultra-Fast Broadband project is the largest telecommunications infrastructure initiative ever launched by the Greek government and one of the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects in Europe.
According to the partnership agreement with the Ministry of Digital Governance, the commercial availability of the network will begin upon the completion of 15% of the project.
Overall, more than 830,000 households and businesses, over 18% of the country’s total, and 10,000 public buildings including schools and health centers, will benefit from the Ultra-Fast Broadband project in areas that were not included in the private investment plans.
The construction period, as specified in the project tender document, will last for 3 years, while the concession period (service period) before the infrastructure is transferred to the public sector is 23 years.
