Bookings via platforms for short-term stays in Greece, such as through Airbnb, posted 28.7% growth year-on-year in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023, according to Eurostat.
The figure contains data derived from Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com and Expedia, which is made possible through a data-sharing agreement between the platforms and Eurostat.
In total, in 2023, 719 million guest nights were spent in short stay accommodation in the EU, booked through one of the four previously mentioned platforms.
This translates to an increase of 20.5% compared to 2022 and is the third year in a row with a double digit y-o-y increase, says Eurostat.
Bookings via platforms have fully recovered and surpassed the lows of 2022, where tourism took a big hit on account of the COVID pandemic.
Data from Eurostat shows that while Q4 growth was variable across countries, overall, all countries except Liechtenstein saw positive developments.
The top nine most popular countries on online platforms are revealed in the graph below, where Greece ranks 7th, and the graph shows that the country has surpassed 2018 booking levels.
