
Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (AIA) continued in its upward course in July last month, posting increased passenger numbers, up by 9.3%, compared to the same month in 2023.
In absolute terms, the 9.3% increase translates into more than 3.61 million passengers passed through Greece’s biggest and busiest airport last month.
Domestic and international passenger traffic for the month was up by 5.9% and 10.8%, respectively, compared to the same month last year.
Over the first seven months of 2024, passenger traffic at AIA reached 17.62 million, up by 14.6% from the same period in 2023.
In terms of flights, 150,344 were recorded in the January-July period of 2024, up by 12.4% in relation to 2023. Domestic flights were up by 5.5% and international flights by 17.8%, compared to the January-July 2023 period.
The figures also generated a revision by AIA’s management for the ongoing year, with the latter now saying it expects roughly 30 million passengers to pass through the airport this year.
In a related development, AIA’s management is in the initial stages of unveiling an investment plan to increase annual capacity to 50 million passengers by 2045, with the first two envisioned phases for such an upgrade budgeted at 1.35 billion euros.
