Fraport Greece, the operator and manager of 14 regional airports across the country, announced this week that it would be proceeding with a third phase of upgrades and runway works.
More specifically, the company said it would be proceeding with runway construction works at the airports of Zakynthos, Kavala, Kefalonia, Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini, Samos, Rhodes, and Lesvos.
Fraport said, second phase upgrade projects had been completed.
In the third phase, runway operations will be suspended at Samos Airport on Nov. 5-25, 2024; at Lesvos Airport every Tuesday from Nov. 15 to March 25, 2025; at Corfu Airport from Nov. 18 to Dec. 8 and on Jan. 13-31, 2025; Kefalonia: Nov. 25-Dec. 15; Rhodes for 48 hours every Tuesday and Thursday from Dec. 10 to Jan. 31, 2025; Santorini: Jan. 8- 23, 2025; Kavala: Jan. 10-30, 2025; Mykonos: January 25-February 15, 2025; and Zakynthos: Feb. 15-March 5, 2025
Greek national carrier AEGEAN and Olympic Air announced that changes and cancellations would be made to flight schedules due to the works. Passengers with tickets on affected flights will be notified of alternative options. Passengers are also advised to visit the airlines’ websites for more information.
During the runway construction periods mentioned above, helicopters will be carrying out emergency flights including patient airlifts, search and rescue, fire-fighting, humanitarian, government and other national flight operations if required. All other airport services at terminals will be available.
According to Fraport Greece, the third phase of upgrade and modernization works concerns the reconstruction of runways and the reconfiguration of runway strips and runway safety areas (RESA) and is aimed at further enhancing the high level of safety. The works are also part of Fraport’s concession agreement.
