Athenians are ranked among the least satisfied compared to employees in other large European cities when it comes to their salary, according to Euronews Business, which analyzed a series of indicators that determine a “satisfactory remuneration package.”
Michael Stull, the Senior Vice President of ManpowerGroup UK, explains that a “good salary” is not only about financial remuneration. Stull notes that when examining the question other benefits are also calculated, like bonuses, stock options, health insurance, pension contributions, paid leave, and other fringe benefits. “In some cases, these benefits can make a lower base salary more appealing,” he underlined.
Chris Chasteen, the Research Director and data scientist at ERI Economic Research Institute, echoes Stull’s sentiments, noting that a “good salary” varies depending on the type of work, education, personal goals, and expectations, as well as factors such as experience, lifestyle, and individual needs, and where someone is living.
In contrast to Athenians, people working in Berlin have an average annual gross salary package ranging between €40-000 and €60,000, with a gross salary between €64-70,000 considered good.
In London, salaries typically range between €59,455 and €83,235 gross annually. HousingAnywhere reported that the average net monthly earnings in the UK were €2,725. In 2023, with the cost of living at €2,314, a net monthly salary between €2,962 and €3,915 was considered a good salary in the UK.
According to a 2023 European Commission survey on the quality of life in European cities, there are significant differences in household financial satisfaction across the EU.
The percentage of people satisfied with their household’s financial situation ranges from 39% in Athens to 87% in Luxembourg.
Satisfaction is generally higher in cities located in northern and western EU countries.
