Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has travelled to New York to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The week-long high-level event comes at a very volatile time for the international stage, as tensions rise in the Middle East and Ukraine, and the US Presidential elections are only 45 days away.
PM Mitsotakis will join his fellow heads of State and Government at the UN Headquarters on Sunday for the two-day UN Summit on the Future, a meeting proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss gaps in and challenges to global governance, reaffirm the SDGs and produce the action-oriented “Pact for the Future”.
Prime Minster Mitsotakis is also set to deliver a speech at the UNGA on Thursday, focusing on the major geopolitical and technological challenges facing the world today. He will highlight Greece’s upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2025, and will also address the Cyprus issue.
The Greek Prime Minister’s visit will also include meetings global leaders including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas.
PM Mitsotakis is also expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a highly anticipated meeting. The two leaders aim to chart a new path for Greek-Turkish dialogue, ahead of the upcoming High-Level Cooperation Council.
On the sidelines of the Summit, PM Mitsotakis is set to attend a dinner organized by the Atlantic Council on Monday where he will receive a Global Citizen Award, for his ” remarkable career in public service and the private sector, as well as his leadership of Greece and in transatlantic, European, and global affairs.”
During his stay in New York, the Greek PM will also attend and speak an event organized by Greek-American organizations in Astoria, Queens on Tuesday.
