The Greek demographic problem, highlighted in numerous studies, was confirmed in a report released on Tuesday by the county’s statistical authority, ELSTAT.
The report, titled “Data on Vital Statistics: 2023,” revealed that the total births in the country in 2023 amounted to 71,455 (36,622 boys and 34,833 girls) recording a decrease of 6.1% in comparison to 76,095 (39,305 boys and 36,790 girls), in 2022.
Deaths amounted to 128,101 (64,898 men and 63,203 women), down by 9.0% in comparison to 140,801 deaths (70,802 men and 69,999 women), in 2022, while infant deaths stood at 248 in 2023, a rise in the infant mortality rate (number of deaths of infants aged less than one year per 1,000 live births) from 3.1 in 2022 to 3.5 in 2023.
Regarding marriages and civil partnerships, the report recorded 40,351 (21,402 religious and 18,949 civil marriages), a 6.9% decrease in comparison to 43,355 (21,381 religious and 21,974 civil marriages), in 2022. The number of registered partnerships recorded an increase of 17.4%, amounting from 12,840 in 2022 to 15,069 in 2023.
Multi-billionaire owner of social platform X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla, Elon Musk, recently took an interest in the Greek demographic problem, calling it a complete collapse, posting two comments in the space of a few months.
The Hellenic Statistical Authority drew the relevant data from Greece’s civil registry acts as issued by the competent municipal authorities and registered in the information system of the Ministry of Interior.
