The operation of new electronic entry/exit gates at six stations on Athens Metro Line 3—Aghia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikea, Maniatika, Piraeus, and Dimotiko Theatro—will gradually begin on Friday, Oct. 11, upgrading the capital city’s transport system.
The new upgraded equipment to Athens Metro Line 3 include 73 electronic entry/exit gates with improved functionality and safety features, along with 6 data management and transmission centers.
46 ATH.ENA Ticket and ATH.ENA Card automatic ticketing machines at Metro stations, with one at each station featuring audio guidance in Greek and English.
Additionally, 20 automatic ticketing machines at Tram stops towards Piraeus, offering visual guidance in 6 languages are installed.
CEO of the Athens Urban Transport Organization George Spiliopoulos, commenting on the occasion of the operation of the new gates said: “The addition of new upgraded equipment to the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) is part of a broader set of interventions and changes implemented by Athens Transport to improve the quality of urban transport services.”
Meanwhile, work on Athens Metro Line 4 continues at a rapid pace, with construction underway at 25 of the total 26 sites.
Preliminary work has already been completed at 20 stations. The tunnel boring machine “Athena” has covered more than two kilometers from Katechaki Avenue and is expected to reach the Zografou station in two weeks. It is estimated that the tunnel construction will be fully completed by the end of 2025.
