The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated U.S. President Donald Trump on his victory in the US elections, emphasizing that Greece-US ties has historically been “impeccable” while speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues related to the Greek Diaspora, on Wednesday November 6.
Mitsotakis highlighted the longstanding, strategic nature of Greek-American relations, which he believes will continue to strengthen under the new U.S. administration.
“I am confident that Greek-American relations will remain steadily strong and productive,” Mitsotakis remarked, reiterating his hope for deeper collaboration between the two governments and their people.
Reflecting on Greece’s international alliances, Mitsotakis noted his invitation to address the U.S. Congress, extended jointly by both the Democratic and Republican parties. He emphasized that Greece’s stance on international relations is “principled and autonomous,” mindful of how transatlantic shifts impact global dynamics.
Mitsotakis also touched upon Europe’s evolving role on the global stage. Stressing the need for the European Union to secure “strategic autonomy” he advocated for initiatives that would make the continent more competitive, economically cohesive, ensure energy independence, and promote collective defense.
“Europe must carve out its place on the world stage,” he stated, “while also fostering social unity and securing energy independence.”
Addressing the Greek diaspora, Mitsotakis emphasized their ongoing connection to Greece, calling it a “privilege” for a nation to have a strong presence abroad.
He noted the recent implementation of postal voting in European elections, a reform passed by his government majority, and pointed to the successful trial as proof that “significant reforms are achievable.” He also expressed his hope that postal voting will be expanded for national elections by 2027.
In his closing remarks, he highlighted the importance of maintaining strong bonds with Greeks worldwide, calling it a “patriotic duty” amid global uncertainty. “Greece is transforming every day, and Greeks everywhere must walk this path with us,” he concluded.
