Hotel prices in Athens have shown a slight increase in Dec. of 2024 approaching the Christmas holiday season, compared to the same period last year, according to the Trivago’s Hotel Index (tHPI). However, Athens continues to rank low, third from the bottom, compared to its EU competitor cities.
The average online price for a double room in the Greek capital is 130 euros this Dec., up 7.44% compared to last year but slightly lower than Nov. by 0.75%.
This Dec. figure is far from Athens’ peak month of June, when average prices exceeded 200 euros, hitting 206 euros. Feb. marked the year’s low point for Athens, with an average price of 115 euros.
Among EU competitors, Istanbul and Warsaw sit below Athens in hotel prices. Istanbul’s average price is 120 euros, an increase of 1.69% compared to Nov. and 11.11% year-on-year. Warsaw recorded an average of 111 euros, up 2.78% from November and 3.74% from December 2023.
Other cities with average prices under 200 euros include Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, and Lisbon. Lisbon stands higher than Athens at 164 euros, up 1.86% year-on-year but down 12.77% from Nov.
Barcelona averages 182 euros, marking a 5.20% increase from last Dec. but a notable 16.51% drop compared to the previous month. Rome’s prices are slightly higher at 189 euros, up 2.72% from last year but down 5.50% from Nov. Berlin remains lower, with an average of 151euros, unchanged from last year.
Meanwhile, hotel prices in cities of Central and Northern Europe, including Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Reykjavik, report average prices exceeding 200 euros. London leads with the highest average of 299 euros, while in Southern Europe, Madrid also crosses the 200 euros threshold, averaging 206 euros.
