Greeks are expected to spend more on their Christmas dinner in 2024 compared to last year according to the Institute of Commerce and Services of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (IN.EM.Y.-ESEE). Due to price hikes on essential goods, consumers will be forced to spend more on the essentials for their festive dinner table.
The institute’s report is based on data provided by the relative key market representatives including supermarket chains and specialized retail stores such as pastry shops and butcher shops.
The estimated cost for this year’s Christmas dinner (serving 6-8 people) ranges from 107.54 euros to 148.89 euros. This represents an increase of 4.3% to 5.8% compared to the corresponding cost in 2023.
As the institute reports this price range is justified by the inclusion of a variety of products of differing quality, sourced from several local markets and different types of stores.
It is important to note that, for the sake of comparability with previous annual studies by the institute on the estimated cost of the cost of Christmas dinner, certain products included in the ‘festive basket’ program which is in effect during the festive period, have not been accounted for.
Conversely, traditional Greek Christmas treats such as ‘melomakarona’ and ‘kourabiedes’ are recorded, as is done every year, even though they are not included in the ‘household basket’ or the ‘festive basket,’ program.
it should be noted that leading up to the Christmas holiday season consumers in Greece will have the opportunity to shop this coming Sunday, as all stores and supermarkets will be open, while they will remain closed on Dec. 25 and 26.
