Greece’s independent privatization agency on Friday published a public tender for a contract to repair and maintain the iconic steel roof above the spectator stands at the Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA).
The roof, designed by noted Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava’s firm, which also supervised the construction, was an emblematic project for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, as OAKA hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, and much of the track and field events.
The tender by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), as the agency is officially called, also includes the adjacent Olympic velodrome, where a full roof also designed by Calatrava was added to the previously open-air venue in 2003 ahead of the Summer Olympics the next year.
The project’s budget exceeds 78 million euros and is financed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund.
Interested parties have a deadline of Feb. 10, 2025, to submit bids.
One of the highlights of the tender is a condition foreseeing that repair and maintenance works be completed within 14 months of the signing of the contract with the winning bidder, and that whatever works are conducted while the venue remains open to events, i.e. pro football matches, concerts etc.
