Tennis star Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title came to an abrupt halt on Friday after the Serbian retired injured during his semi-final match against Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Djokovic bowed out after losing the first set 7-6(5), allowing Zverev to advance to his first Australian Open final.
The world was watching as Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, stepped onto Rod Laver Arena with his left thigh visibly strapped, raising questions about his fitness. Despite early concerns, the Serbian initially showed little sign of discomfort, maintaining his characteristic intensity during the set. However, as the tie-break unfolded, Djokovic’s physical struggles became evident.
His movements slowed, and visible frustration emerged as he directed comments toward his players’ box. After dropping the first set, Djokovic walked over to Zverev and the chair umpire, signaling his inability to continue. The unexpected retirement was met with a mixed reaction, including boos from the crowd, a response Zverev swiftly condemned during his post-match interview.
“The very first thing I want to say is, please guys, don’t boo a player when he goes out with injury,” Zverev addressed the audience. “I know everyone wanted to see a great match, but Novak has won this tournament through pain before. Show him the respect he deserves.”
Djokovic, who famously won the tournament in the past while battling abdominal and hamstring injuries, appeared determined to power through once again. Unfortunately, the injury proved too severe for him to continue.
The Australian Open wished Djokovic a speedy recovery in a post on X

Zverev, who will now compete in Sunday’s final, awaits the winner of the second semi-final between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and American rising star Ben Shelton. With this victory, Zverev moves one step closer to his maiden Grand Slam title, a long-awaited achievement for the German.
For Djokovic, the disappointment adds to the heartbreak of his semi-final loss last year to Sinner and delays his quest for a record 25th major title.
