According to the most recent data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) the total petroleum consumption in Greece for 2023 saw a decrease of 3.3%.
Specifically, the figures reveal a 3.3% drop in overall petroleum consumption compared to 2022, with the corresponding amounts reaching 6,837,722 metric tons for 2023, down from 7,071,820 metric tons in 2022.
Notably, there was an increase in the annual consumption of several petroleum products: super unleaded gasoline 98/100 rose by 16.8%, low-sulfur fuel oil increased by 2.7%, diesel consumption grew by 2.1%, LPG by 2%, and regular unleaded gasoline saw a 1.9% rise.
In contrast, there was a significant decrease in the annual consumption of heating oil, which fell by 32.9%, and high-sulfur fuel oil, which dropped by 13.6%.
Throughout 2023, the regions in Greece with the highest petroleum consumption were Attica and Central Macedonia, followed by Thessaly, Western Greece, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Crete, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, South Aegean, and Western Macedonia.
The lowest consumption levels were recorded in the Ionian Islands and the Northern Aegean regions.
The survey is conducted on an annual census basis by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The ministry’s General Directorate collects data from all petroleum trading and refining companies nationwide and it provides data on the total consumption of petroleum products by category.
The findings are presented at the national, regional, and sub-regional levels. The Directorate then transmits the data to Greece’s statistical authority (ELSTAT).
