The latest study by a pair of top transportation engineers shows what motorists in the Greater Athens-Piraeus agglomeration already know too well: traffic congestion in the Greek capital is torturous.
According to the results of the study, presented last week, traffic is congested for more than one-third of every weekday in Athens. Moreover, the average traffic speed in the center of Athens has fallen by 11% over the three years since the pandemic.
On average, car drivers and their passengers who venture out onto Greater Athens’ roads will spend roughly half an hour in the vehicle to cover a distance of 10 kilometers.
During a one-day seminar organized by the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers, Athens Polytechnic Prof. Konstantinos Kepaptsoglou and traffic engineering consultant Konstantinos Kouretas, the Institute’s general secretary, said Athens has the eighth highest time in Europe for covering the 10-kilometer distance, at roughly 30 minutes. London has the highest figure at 33.17 minutes.
