Greece’s two leading scientific committees on seismic risk and volcanic activity have completed their latest assessment of the ongoing tremors near the islet of Anydro, between Santorini and Amorgos. Meeting on Sunday, February 16, experts emphasized the need for continued vigilance for potential volcanic activity after analyzing the latest data on the region’s seismic behavior.
The session, held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, was attended by Minister Vassilis Kikilias and a panel of scientists.
After reviewing all available evidence, they noted that while the seismic sequence in the area appears to be subsiding, with around 1,300 recorded tremors of magnitude 3.0 or higher since February 1, the situation remains under close observation. The strongest earthquake so far reached a magnitude of 5.3.
Experts attributed the ongoing activity near Anydro to underwater faults running in a northeast-southwest direction, a pattern consistent with the region’s broader geodynamic framework. They believe this seismic activity is driven by a combination of tectonic shifts and deeper magmatic processes.
Meanwhile, inside the Santorini Caldera, seismic activity has remained stable, but an increase in ground deformation across the wider Santorini region has prompted further monitoring.
Despite the persistent activity, structural inspections have shown that public buildings in the affected areas have withstood the seismic forces well.
The committees affirmed that existing precautionary measures will remain in effect to ensure public safety, with authorities reassuring residents and visitors that all precautionary measures will remain in place to ensure public safety.
Scientists continue to track developments closely, highlighting the importance of preparedness in an area with a complex seismic and volcanic history.
