
The international passenger traffic at Greece’s largest airport, Athens International Airport (AIA), continues to soar. According to recent announcements, passenger traffic in February of 2025 reached 1.75 million, marking an 8.9% increase compared to the same month in 2024. Both domestic and international passenger numbers exceeded the levels of 2024 by 2.3% and 11.9%, respectively.
Overall, during the first two months of the year, the airport welcomed 3.59 million passengers, an 11.7% increase. Both domestic and international traffic saw growth, with domestic numbers rising by 3.6% and international traffic increasing by 15.3%.
The announcement also pointed out that February 2024 had one additional day due to the leap year, with February 28 seeing no flights in Greek airspace due to a nationwide general strike.
In terms of flights, the total number of operations at Athens International Airport during the first two months of 2025 amounted to 31,832, reflecting an 8.2% increase compared to 2024. Domestic flights saw a slight decline of 2.1%, while international flights surged by 15.6% compared to the same period in 2024.
Looking at the overall picture for 2024, passenger traffic at Athens’ main airport reached 31.85 million, an increase of 13.1% compared to 2023. Both domestic and international traffic surpassed 2023 levels by 7.3% and 15.7%, respectively.
The number of flights in 2024 totaled 268,301, up by 11.0% from the previous year. Domestic flights grew by 5.1%, while international flights saw an impressive rise of 15.5%.
In a significant milestone, the airport has entered the top-10 of Europe’s busiest airports according to Eurostat data.
For the first time in its history, Athens International Airport ranked eighth in terms of flight numbers among the 27 EU countries, surpassing Vienna’s Schwechat Airport (ninth place) and falling just below Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (seventh place).
