Mads Qvist Frederiksen, Executive Director of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC), talked with the Deputy Chief Editor of TO BHMA International Edition, Cheryl Novak at the OT Delphi Economic Forum X.

In his opening response, Frederiksen explained the organization’s role as a business membership group, with a Greek presence. “The Union of Greek Shipowners is a member of our organization. What we normally do is represent people conducting business in the Arctic.”

Frederiksen spoke about the challenges the Arctic region faces, the emerging opportunities, and the role of Greek shipping in its development.

He pointed out that the Arctic Ocean is six times the size of the Mediterranean Sea, yet home to only four million people, 10% of whom are Indigenous. Despite its sparse population, the region holds vast resources—abundant seafood that could help feed the world, energy sources including both traditional oil and gas as well as renewables, and critical raw materials essential for the green transition. “For many years, these resources were either inaccessible or unknown, but that is now changing,” he emphasized.

When asked about Greece’s involvement in the Arctic, Frederiksen highlighted the visit of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Finland last December, noting the contrast in weather between the two countries at that time.
