The government spokesman has confirmed that the “truth team” was in the pay of a private company owned by Varvitsiotis and Olympios.
Referring to the reports published by “Inside Story” that revealed the notorious “Truth Team” was paid by a company owned by T. Varvitsiotis and G. Olympiou of V+O Communication, the spokesman, speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum X noted that “a private individual received payment from other private individuals, and for some people this is a horrifying revelation.”
A damning investigation published Friday by “Inside Story”, an independent Greek investigative outlet, exposed what appears to be a covert propaganda network operating at the heart of Greece’s ruling party, New Democracy (ND). The report centers on Blue Skies S.A., a private communications firm co-owned by Thomas Varvitsiotis and Yiannis Olympios—both with close personal and political ties to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Thomas Varvitsiotis and Yiannis Olympios are founders and co-managing directors of V+O Group, a PR agency in Greece 70% of which was bought by the multinational SEC newgate.
Since 2018, Blue Skies has been employing key architects of “Team Truth”—a highly active, unofficial digital media unit known for aggressively amplifying New Democracy’s message and defending Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis across social platforms.
Crucially, several members of the group have also held roles within the government’s official communications teams, including the Prime Minister’s Office—blurring the line between party-driven propaganda and state-sanctioned messaging. Those figures include Orsaki Roussetou (formerly in the PM’s office and a confirmed Predator spyware target), Giorgos Tzanoudakis (former ND social media lead), and Christos Tzelis (also linked to a private firm receiving government contracts). This suggests a revolving door between government positions and private PR work tied to the ruling party.
The government spokesperson stated on Saturday that “Our country needs multiple truth teams, meaning as many people as possible who, without donning balaclavas or concealing their identities, deconstruct the vulgarity and propaganda issuing from certain parts of the Left and Center-left, and sometimes from the Far Right. How I wish that everyone who expressed their opinions openly, without hiding behind others, was also paid by private individuals.”
At the same time, he stressed that “our accusers are not victims but perpetrators; they accused us of murder, and now they’re looking for payback.”
Finally, he said that the members of the Truth Group are private individuals who do what they do because they believe in it, before wondering whether “people have to apologize for supporting us? Everyone has the right to express themselves as they see fit. If PASOK and SYRIZA are wondering why they’re falling apart, all they need do is look in the mirror.”
